Designing with Wood Flooring: A Residential Focus
Presenter:
Walter Lourie
About:
This course empowers residential design professionals to use wood flooring as a design element—beyond function and durability. From plank dimensions to patterns, tones, and finishes, wood flooring offers endless customization. Learn how to integrate texture, color, layout, and finish to enhance the spatial and emotional experience of home environments.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify how plank width, length, thickness, and pattern layouts (e.g., herringbone, chevron, mixed-width) influence the visual scale and tone of a space.
- Evaluate the impact of species, cut, and grade on overall design, including color tone, movement, and rustic vs. refined aesthetics.
- Compare finish treatments (brushed, smoked, limed, pigmented oils, matte poly) and their role in tactile and light interaction within residential interiors.
- Learn how to align wood floor design choices with broader residential design goals including biophilia, wellness, and emotional connection to materiality.
This course is accredited for 1 LU/HSW (AIA).
