Native Plants and Biophilic Design
Presenter:
Mac Carbonell is the founder and creative director of VERDANT, a critically acclaimed landscape design studio based in Brooklyn, New York. Mac leads the studio in redefining the role of landscape design in an urban setting and reconsidering opportunities to improve the well-being of office workers and homeowners alike. Since the firm’s inception 20 years ago, VERDANT has endeavored to shift the design process toward a workflow that more thoughtfully explores what landscape can offer. VERDANT has numerous signature projects highlighting the dynamic relationship between landscape and architecture, including: the Flower Box Building in the East Village, the Enclosed Forest at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and Skymeadow at Flavor Paper’s headquarters in Brooklyn.
About:
This course presents several case studies using native plants within modern landscape design. VERDANT’s talk highlights potential avenues of collaboration between landscape designers and architects, focusing on unexpected ways landscape can enrich architectural projects at different scales. With legislation passed requiring sustainable roof zones in New York City (Local Laws 92 & 94), finding creative ways of integrating vegetation into roof construction is more critical than ever.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the importance of utilizing native plants and biophilic design.
- Understand basic green roof buildup and design requirements as compared to more substantial amenity roof terraces, especially as it pertains to new local laws.
- Learn how native plants can be applied across different scales and project typologies.
- Use case studies to illustrate ways in which designed landscape enhance private and public user experience.
