Cork 101 and Cork 201

Christopher Capobianco is a member of the nationwide business development team at Spartan Surfaces and a fourth generation flooring professional with over 50 years of real-world experience, in residential and commercial flooring sales, installation, and technical support. Christopher has held leadership positions in notable professional flooring associations such as FCICA, ASTM, and IICRC. In 2019, he was award the “Francis J.P McHale Scholarship Award” by the Greater NY Floor Coverers Association.
About:
Cork has been used as a flooring material for over 100 years, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of the earliest known uses of cork flooring was in public buildings, such as libraries and churches, due to its durability, comfort, and sound-absorbing properties. Cork’s natural resilience, warmth, and eco-friendliness have continued to make it a popular choice for flooring ever since.
We are offering two one hour classes:
Cork 101 seminar covers the history of cork as a material, how it gets from the forest to the floor, the characteristics of cork tile, including installation and maintenance.
Learning objectives:
- The history of cork trees, where they are grown, and what makes cork such an interesting material.
- Participants will learn how the cork tree becomes a flooring material.
- Participants will learn the natural characteristics that make cork a wonderful flooring material.
- Participants will learn about installation, finishes and maintenance.
Cork 201 seminar goes into greater detail, examining ASTM standards for cork tiles, cork floating floors, and vertical applications. It also addresses advanced topics like installation techniques, refinishing, and even the debated issue of a potential shortage of cork for wine bottles.
Learning objectives:
- Review the ASTM standards for glue down cork and floating floors – including where to specify them.
- Review how and why cork is used for wall surfaces.
- Review different finish options and detailing. Review which products hold up commercially and how to maintain them.
- Review environmental impact and understand indoor air quality specifications.
This course is accredited as 2 separated 1 LU/HSW per class.
